Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Edgecombe County

Attend an Information Session

The first step in becoming an Extension Master Gardener℠ (EMG) volunteer in Edgecombe County is attending an information session. During this session, you will learn what it means to be an EMGV and the training and volunteer requirements for the program. This will help you decide if becoming an EMGV is the right choice for you. The Session will be held in person at the East Carolina Agriculture and Education Center, 1175 Kingsboro Rd. Rocky Mount, NC 27801.

The session is scheduled for December 14, 2021, at 10 a.m.

Submit Your application and training fee by January 1, 2022.

Applications for the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Edgecombe County are due by January 1, 2022. To receive a printed copy of the application and Certification Agreement, contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Edgecombe County at (252) 641-7821 or email spencer_thomas@ncsu.edu.

2022 EMGV Application & Certification Agreement

The total cost for Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer training is $150.00. The cost includes $55.00 for access to the fully integrated NC Extension Gardener Handbook (e-book), $45.00 for expenses directly related to course delivery including name tags, training materials, and supplies, as well as a $50.00 program development fee per trainee that is assessed by NC State University. This program development fee is the sole funding source for the statewide Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Edgecombe County (staff, website maintenance, program development, etc.).

Attend Orientation

An orientation session for participants accepted into the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Edgecombe County will be January 5, 3–5 p.m. This meeting is mandatory for those who have applied for the Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Edgecombe County.

Complete 10-Week Training Intensive

The 2022 initial training for Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers will be taught using a combination of in-person and online work. Trainees will use an online portal to complete weekly reading, homework, and quiz assignments as assigned by the Extension agent. Trainees will then meet once a week, in person, for further hands-on training. The in-person schedule is as follows:

January 11, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

January 18, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

February 1, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

February 8, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

February 15, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

February 22, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

March 1, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

March 8, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

March 15, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

March 22, 2022: 2–4 p.m.

**Meeting times are subject to change based on final trainees’ availability.**


Volunteers will complete a 40-hour internship within one year of completing this training. Trainees are encouraged to begin volunteering during the training course.
